RECOVER

11/21/13: Went to see Dr. Jay Marumoto, my local ortho who took care of my achilles tear and broken back. His group, Orthopedic Associates, recently moved to the new Hale Pawaa building on King and Keeaumoku. Not getting any younger he mused. Decided not to put on a cast and just gave me a removable brace. Goal was to keep it semi-flexible to speed recovery time. I assumed it was because I had the plate and screws holding the fib break together.

11/26/13: Back to Jay to take out the stitches. The "centipede" stitch looked ominous, but I was assured that that is one style that seems to work well, minimizing scarring. Stoked to learn that I could swim in a couple days. Recommended protecting the stitch wound with Super Glue to keep it germ-free.

Black Friday: Did not do it. Got to Costco though, thanks to those great electric carts.

11/30/13: Gave the pool a shot. It felt sooo good being untethered and able to swim. Foot was still locked in a non-hydrodynamic position but it didn't matter. Also gingerly tested standing and walking on it while mostly submerged. Felt like those old folks in Cocoon.

Beached but still trying to document the Triple Crown of Surfing from shore.

Holidays: crippled.

Thought I would immediately gain weight, but for some reason I lost my appetite. This coupled with muscle loss everywhere made me drop ten pounds in no time flat. Not the way I wanted to lose weight.

12/10/13: Went back to Jay for the four-week prognosis. Said I was ready for rehab and I could start putting partial weight on it. Chose Jaco rehab near the Honolulu Club (soon to be moving to Hale Pawaa near Orthopedic Associates). So began the next chapter of the journey.
