REHAB

12/13/13: First day of PT at Jaco. Got an appointment with Marco Adame, my daughter's therapist. Great guy. Discussed the injury and the situation. Did some sort of stretch/massage and practiced a few simple stretch/strengthening routines. Ended with a pressure/cooling "boot" on the ankle. Loved being pampered.

Remember Marco saying that he's going to have to teach me how to walk again. That was hard to believe but proved 100% true.

Tried to establish a twice a week regimen of PT, and made a point to stretch and exercise two or three times a day.

Therapy was a mix of pleasure and pain. Again, I loved getting pampered as my calf muscle and ankle area was massaged and kneaded to recover from muscle atrophy. But sometimes was sore!

Focus was on stretch, strength and stability as I learned all kinds of different moves to improve my condition. We had amusing names to make it easier to remember, including windshield wipers, woodpeckers, and Captain Morgans.

Ankle stayed swollen and a little numb. That was disconcerting, but I was told that the swelling may take a year to subside and the numbness may never completely go away. Wake up call to the severity of it all.

Here's a list of some of the things I did:
Ankle pumps (elevated)
Ankle alpha (upper & lower)
Toe crunches (towel)
Calf stretches leg straight & bent
Windshield wipers
Woodpeckers (lean towards wall)
Seated calf raise
Standing calf raise up on two feet, down on one
Toes out, heels together
Toes together, heels out
Squat w/ head lift
Captain Morgans
Ankle stretch
One leg balance
One legged dumbbell squat/reach
Tiptoe walk
Sideways walk
Step-downs
One-legged squats
Tennis ball under calf
Clock
Single leg balance, eyes shut, turn head

HMSA allowed 16 sessions. Finished up on Feb 11. Ankle far from 100%. Flexibility is good, but stability and strength are terrrible. The road to recovery continues...
